Thursday 22nd November

Renowned Dublin performance poet & playwright STEPHEN JAMES SMITH brings his brilliant “My Ireland” poetry tour to the Droichead stage this Autumn, promoting his new book of poetry Fear Not. The performance will feature Irish musician Enda Reilly.

As at home on large stages, as small ones, alongside musicians and spoken word artists, Stephen is truly versatile and impressive. He has performed at high profile events & venues such as Electric Picnic, other voices, The National Concert Hall in Dublin, The Barbican in London, Vicar Street & the London Palladium, The Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles, Glastonbury Festival and many more. To date, his poetry videos have amassed over 1 million views online.

In 2017 he was commissioned by St. Patrick’s Festival to write a new poem as a “Celebratory Narrative” of Ireland. The resultant piece ‘My Ireland’ is accompanied by a short film which has been viewed over 300,000 times and was screened at the London Film Festival.

Stephen is a co-founder of LINGO Festival (inaugural festival in 2014), Ireland’s only spoken word festival, and poetry curator of the annual First Fortnight Festival. He co-produced Dublin: A Year in Words poetry video series for Dublin UNESCO City of Literature.

“Passionate, witty, just plain great” – Roddy Doyle

“Here are poems fuelled by the raw urgency of language leaping to meet the world.” – Paula Meehan

Support on the night is from Drogheda based writer NICOLA CASSIDY who will perform a new spoken word piece entitled: Romeo and Juliet; a love story, based on the 1996 movie by Baz Luhrmann. Nicola will use film and song to take a look at the impact the love story had on her and her friend’s lives, as they entered their teenage years. Nicola is the author of historical fiction novel December Girl, set in the Boyne Valley in the 19th century, which became a best seller on Amazon in 2018. She will release her second novel in June 2019, also set in Drogheda. She is a blogger, a singer and Mum to two small girls, who occupy all her time, in between writing.
