Raise the Stairs - Barlow House Fund

By donating to the Barlow House Fund, you will help raise much needed funds to maintain the upkeep of this magnificent historical building. We are now embarking on our biggest fundraising initiative to date, restoring the magnificent cantilever stairs.

In 1999, Droichead Arts Centre made history purchasing Barlow House, a fine Georgian Building situated on Narrow West Street, as a second premises for the arts centre. The building functions as offices and room rental space for workshops, classes and meetings. Built in 1734 by Alderman James Barlow, it is regarded as the finest Palladian style Georgian Townhouse to survive in Drogheda. In 1986, An Foras Forbatha declared the building to be of national importance.

In recent years, Barlow House had its grand windows restored. Now we need to restore the stairs.  We have sucessfully secured €20,000 from the Historic Structures Fund under the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and need to raise another €15,000 from private funds.  The staircase is a timber cantilevered type – a form of construction which evolved in the 15th Century for ‘Grand’ houses. In the 1999 refurbishment, although the Ground Floor quarry tiling was refurbished, the stairwell was not repaired. The stairs appear to cantilever out from the walls with no support for the outer strings except from the strings below. The form of construction made use of the strength of timber both in tension and compression. The principle of the cantilever stairs is that all weight on the outer string is transferred down to the first riser at Ground Level. The stairs have been in use for 280 years and in this time the timbers to the outer string have deflected from the horizontalal.

RAISE THE STAIRS FUND will allow for urgent long term conservation and restoration works to be carried out to the stairs.

Donations over €250 are tax deductible.
