SOLO: Home from Home | LIVE ON STAGE

Droichead Arts Centre presents SOLO: Home from Home

SOLO, curated by SJ McArdle, is an intimate concert series which Droichead has produced in various guises, and has seen performances from Maria Doyle Kennedy, Niamh Regan, Ollie Cole, Niamh Parsons and many more. Over the past two years, the series has moved online, but now we are delighted to bring it back in front of a live audience. “SOLO: Home from Home” will take place over four Saturdays in September in the theatre at Droichead. Each week’s show will feature two artists, making a total of eight engaging performances from some of the most innovative artists in Ireland today.

SJ McArdle is an Irish songwriter and musician, Artist in Association at Droichead Arts Centre and is known for his work in contemporary Irish folk band Kern from 2013 to 2020. More recently, as a solo artist, SJ has been working on a project called Port, a song-cycle based around research into the stories of Drogheda’s historic Port, produced in association with Droichead, an album is on the way. His songs and performances have been featured in radio, film and television and he has toured extensively, nationally and internationally over the past twenty years.

Joy Booth is a singer/songwriter from Navan, Co. Meath. No stranger to some of Ireland’s best venues and festivals, Joy has opened shows for many musical luminaries, including Wallis Bird, Cathy Davey, Pilgrim St, Declan O’Rourke, Mary Coughlan and The Lost Brothers. Her own brand of music is a folk/blues blend, coupling captive melodic turns with disarmingly honest lyrics.

Irish singer-songwriter Mark Geary left Ireland with a one-way ticket to New York and a heart full of hope over twenty years ago. There, in Sin-é cafe, Mark honed his craft and sang alongside the best of them, including the late Jeff Buckley. Time Out NY said, “His delicate songs about love and defiance recall Richard Thompson and John Lennon.”

Returning to SOLO after participating in 2020, Dagogo Hart is a Dublin based poet, writer, playwright, performer and spoken word artist. Since then he has performed for festivals like Mother tongues, St. Patricks, Dublin Fringe, Drogheda literary festival, Spirit of Folk, Body and Soul, Loud Poets Scotland and First fortnight. In 2018, he co-founded a poetry collective called WeAreGriot; A poetry collective that curates art events around poetry, with FeliSpeaks.

The composer and pianist Michael Holohan has resided in Drogheda since 1983. His compositions have been performed and broadcast both at home and internationally. He is a founding member and former chairman of the Droichead Arts Centre and a former chairman of the Association of Irish Composers. In 1999 he was elected to Aosdána, Ireland’s state-sponsored academy of creative artists, and recently served as chair of the Toscaireacht.

Ambient Neoclassical Pianist / Composer Úna Keane mines deep. A classically trained pianist with a background in Tech, her work lives + breathes in a unique, multi-disciplinary space incorporating piano, electronics, movement & film. At the end of 2019, Úna released sophomore instrumental Album 'In the Deep' with shows at D-Light Studios in Dublin and Servant Jazz Quarters in London. Her work has been compared to that of Ólafur Arnalds and Max Richter. Úna also returns to SOLO following performances in 2020.

Channeling the music of her ancestors through her deep rooted Irish traditional fiddling and bilingual song, Clare Sands is a unique force in Irish music. A sixth generation fearless feisty fiddler, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is breaking the boundaries of Irish Music. She makes pulsating Folk music, infused with a myriad of influences from around the world to create an invigorating new sound, for the young and the old, brave and the bold.

Aoife Scott is an Award Winning folk singer and songwriter based in Dublin, Ireland. Born into the legendary Black Family, Aoife is steadily rising to the top of the traditional and folk music scene and has long enjoyed success as an established artist in her own right. Fragile and ethereal one minute and strong and vibrant the next, her dynamic and profound vocals explore the emotional depths of her lyrics, leaving the audience entranced.

Seanie Vaughan is an indie rock and folk artist from Connemara, Galway, based in Drogheda for over a decade. In 2011, Seanie released his debut album “Altered Vision” which reached no.5 in the Irish Indie Album Charts. The album features lyrics with obvious connotations of growing up in rural Ireland. A key to Vaughan's music is that each and every person should be able to relate to it and take something away from it for themselves.
