Friday 15th November

The Navarra Quartet has built an international reputation as one of the most dynamic and poetic string quartets of today. Winners of countless, notable competitions and awards, this is their first performance in Drogheda.

Performing a programme themed around Love and Death, the first half of the programme is a collection of short works by Kurtag, Turrina and Puccini plus Janacek’s famous quartet, Kreutzer Sonata, based on Tolstoy's novella. The programme ends with one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden. Some interpret it as Schubert's testament to death, and find that the theme of death is palpable in all four movements. It is a breath taking work and incredible work to experience live.

"The players realize the music’s essential intensity with their vivid sense of dramatic expression in an intensely detailed performance." - BBC Music Magazine *****

This series is in partnership with Droichead Arts Centre, funded by the Arts Council and Louth County Council with sponsorship from the d hotel.
