"The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn" - Gloria Steinem

Two are born into empty space. Two take their first breath, their first steps, their first foray into a world in which their parallel lives will be divided and dictated by one thing: gender.

Boy, Girl, Repeat is an experimental work in development, which marks Quintessence Theatre’s first project in their ‘Hear Me Roar: Women, Gender and Silence programme as the new Theatre Company in Residence at Droichead Arts Centre.

Told entirely without words through stylised movement, soundscape and mime, it follows the story of Boy and Girl from cradle to grave, exploring how that specific crucial difference assigned at birth shapes their whole social existence within the same world.

Hear Me Roar: Women, Gender, and Silence

Quintessence Theatre Company will be in residence in Droichead Arts Centre for the next twelve months. Previously resident in An Táin, Dundalk, for the past 3 years, the company have devised and produced a body of exciting and engaging work to date, including Cracks, and The Star of Chester’s Lane. For Droichead Arts Centre, Quintessence will devise a new programme of work entitled Hear Me Roar: Women, Gender, and Silence, dedicated to women’s voices and stories, now and historically. Through doing so, they examine the smothering inhibitions strict gender dichotomies and control places on women and, by consequence, transgender people and men too. Following Boy, Girl, Repeat, two further productions are planned during the residency, one inspired by the bravery of the 'Silence Breakers' and the viral #MeToo movement, and one based on a curious case of a Clogherhead born soldier in Lincoln’s army.
