Friday 7th June

Based on the novella “Letters of a County Matchmaker”, CTD’s production of John B. Keane’s beloved hit comedy will play at Droichead Arts Centre for one night only this June, part of our summer theatre season.

Starring TV favourites Mary McEvoy (Glenroe) and Jon Kenny (d’Unbelievables), The Matchmaker follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O’Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn. Together, McEvoy and Kenny portray a myriad of characters in this hilarious and earthy dramatic comedy.

I saw it, laughed, cried, loved it and went again.” - The Guardian

John B. Keane was an avid observer of people and the cultures that bind and create their view of the world. Aware that generations of people became masters of their own destinies later in life, Keane used “The Matchmaker” as an exploration of rural loneliness.

Using his inimitable way with words and his sense of “devilment” and wit, Keane delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of this collection of lonely country people, creating a marvellously colourful world that takes us back to a simpler time, when phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders.

Mary McEvoy is best known for her roles as “Biddy” in the long running RTE series Glenroe. Morerecently, she can be seen in Alison Spittle’s Nowhere Fast, and is also a regular on RTÉ Today with Daithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane.

Actor and comedian Jon Kenny was part of the Irish comic duo d’Unbelievables with Pat Shortt, and has also had multiple appearances in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted.
